In case you have time on your hands to carve out your favorite 2" thick hardback, here's an idea...

FYI...it is a MAJOR pain in the rear, but it pretty slick once it's finished.  Don't leave this lying around the house or in the coffee shop.  Wink

Where's Rook and his .500? I bet that would fit.

I actually did the same thing with a copy of the book of mormon (showed up on my door step one sunday morning). I cut it to fit my Llama micro-Max. I don't use it, but I thought it would be funny to try.

I've made more than a couple and given them away through the years.  I prefer to use a glue stick to stick all the pages together, except for the first 10 or so at the beginning, then use a ruler and an exacto knife to start cutting 5 or so pages at a time (depending on thickness of pages).  The trick is to keep the edges vertically straight, and not let them angle in toward the hole the deeper you cut.  Then I use hot-glue to stick them all to the back cover.  Once done, I like to finish the raw cuts on the inside by gluing felt on the inside of the hole, but that's just because I'm CDO (it's kind of like OCD, but in alphabetical order, like it should be).

I've though about using spray adhesive instead of glue sticks, as it may be faster, but messier... you don't want to use a heavy glue, like Elmers, as it will cause the pages to 'wrinkle'.  It's a fun little task while wasting time watching chick flicks with the lady.

and here I thought it was usually done with a laser cutting tool set to 5/8 the thickness of the over-all thickness of the book, followed up with an insta-bond acrylic fusion treatment.  Grin

It's an age-old concealment, originally used for derringers, but would work just as well for today's Mouseguns.

Nice work!   Smiley

We have a person here in town that does books this way for security storage.  He glues the edges, then uses a band saw to cut the hole.  He glues the pages to the back of the book.

You could even go as far as cutting the hole to the outline of the firearm that will be going in it.  If you have room, then cut a few more slots for spare magazines!

Tried that a few times as a kid.  Absolute pain in the tail, and I had pages tearing on the edges etc before I even got through the first few chapters of the book.  I love the idea (though I'm thinking that an old fashioned "stash can" in my messy pantry might be best for small things, like some emergency cash), but in the event I ever decide I must have one I'll buy a handmade one on eBay or something.

In short:  I like the idea, but given my poor previous performance and the relative cost of buying these things vs paying for Xacto knife-induced stitches, I'll buy one if I need one.  Those with more coordination and/or better tools could probably easily make one.

I haven't tried this yet, but a person I worked with that was a friend of the man making the cut out books told me that he used a band saw to make the cut outs.  He first coated the edges of the pages with a white glue and water mix, than starting at the bottom made the cut out.  Needles to say, he moved the covers and a couple of pages at the front back from the cutting.  I keep saying I am going to the thrift store and buy some books and try this, but as the previous post says, things get in the way.

I too, tried this as a boy, using an old pocket knife.  The hole kept getting smaller, the further I went.

I work in a prison. This book trick is tried by incoming inmate very often. Mostly with drugs though.

I recently tried the band saw trick on a book.  I went to the thrift store and pruchased a book for .50.  I got a good thick on so I could make a good hide out book.
I have a 10 inch table top band saw with a 1/4 in blade with 6 teeth per inch.  The nearly two inch thick book was more then my little saw really wanted to handle, and turning a corner was impossible.  I am going to try again later with a thinner book.

I thought about trying a Bible a few years ago but the pages are so thin, I really don't think it would work. Quite possibly it would be easier to use the cover of a Bible but the pages from a book the same size. That way you wouldn't have to fight with those super thin pages in the Bible.
