 SOME PF9 HISTORY:
 
   The PF9 was asked for by KTOG. We have clamored for a single stack nine for many years. Its impending production was first revealed to us here in November 2005--And to the general public at the SHOT show February of 2006.

 We talked about it for months, finally running out of anything factual and resorting to speculation:

   The original shipment date was supposed to be May of 2006, but it kept being postponed. Nobody has ever told us exactly why shipment did not start until late September of 2006. My R204x Was built 8/21/06, but was not SHIPPED until 9/26/06. Unconfirmed rumor has it that magazine delivery was the holdup.

   The following letter designations were developed on KTOG for differentiating among the various PF9 versions. They are not factory related and Kel-Tec would probably not recognize models by letter. Please do not confuse these MODEL letters with letters in the serial number. For  example: C models  may have an A, B, C, D, E or F in their serial number.

A MODELS:  
 
   The first 100 PF9s were mostly bought by the factory employees and distributors. George Kellgren himself took the first 19 off the assembly line. They were released in late September 2006 and Wilson was the very first KTOGer to get one on 10/01/06:

   It was a good concept. The PF-9 fits a niche between the P11 and the P3AT. It competes against the slightly smaller and far more expensive kahr PM9:

   IMO, KT employees and KTOGers got the bulk of the A model production. Only thirteen found their way to KTOG and I have never heard of anyone else having an A Model. So it's possible that only 13 PF9 A models got into customer hands.

   IMO, the company made the mistake of assuming that by mixing parts from two proven reliable pistols, (P3AT and P11) they would produce an equally reliable pistol that did not need the same amount of rigorous testing of production PF-9s as a brand new design from scratch would require.

   The little A model production gun had a slew of problems that weren't found in pre-production testing.
 
PROBLEMS IN THE 100 A MODELS:
 
1. Some early barrels had SHORT THROATS that would not chamber the longer 147 grain ammo:

2. They tried to use the same screw for the sight as for the extractor. But when the screw was tightened during production this caused it to intrude into the hammer arc which caused:  
3. HAMMER PEENING from hitting the screw, which caused:  
4. HAMMER SLIDE SCORING, which caused additional wear to the hammer which then caused more hammer slide scoring etc. which caused  
5. A PLETHORA OF FINE BRASS DUST from the cartridges being shaved by the rough hammer slide.  
6. The FIRING PIN CHANNEL in the slide was TOO LARGE and allowed the FP to wobble around and strike the primer crookedly.

7. LIGHT PRIMER STRIKES and FAIL TO FIRES. The large hole also quickly attracted brass shavings from the:

9. FTS, (Fail To Something) a weird kind of FTFeed that locked open the breech with the cartridge nose trapped under the Slide stop tab.

10. It also had problems with the first 3 rounds in the magazine tending to NOSE DIVE INTO THE FEED RAMP.  
 
11. The MAGAZINE follower is a soft material and quickly developed a GOUGE caused by the last round flipping end for end and smacking its rim into the top of the follower.

12. The SLIDE was NOT PROPERLY HARDENED. This caused slide bending which gradually caused:

   The PF9 magazines, for whatever reason, appear not to be made by MecGar. (Rumor has it that MecGar was too busy with a government contract.)
 
   The PF9 magazine followers are a soft plastic that dents easily and the sharper slide lock tabs tend to dig holes in them.

  These mags also apparently have sharper edges in the mag catch area and tend to wear mag catches quickly if the catch is not depressed during mag insertion.
 
B MODELS:
 
   All who returned their dull blued A models received back brand new Parkerized B models with their old serial number stamped thereon.

   Almost all of the A model problems were corrected in the B model. Mine is still flawless after 600 rounds.
 
   The original first owners, the PIONEERS who bought the early A and B models are listed HERE:

C MODELS:
 
   Production of A Models was halted 10/06 while KT sorted out the slide hardening problems. When production resumed at about SN 100,

 The brightly blued C model was born. This gun may still have some problems:
 
1. Starting after 200-400 rounds: OCASIONAL FTLoads due to cartridges NOSE DIVING INTO FEED RAMPs  
2. EJECTORS that BREAK AFTER 200-700 rounds.  
3. ASSEMBLY PINS that LOSE THEIR HEADS unexpectedly.  
4. The SLIDE LOCK TAB has been changed several times and may be so sharp now, that it CUTS A HOLE into the mag follower:

5. DISCOLORED SLIDES where super-hardened areas did not blue well.  
 
   On 01/17/07 KT announced full production of the PF9.  Full production probably means 700-1000 per week or more. IMO, delivery of C models was halted just a few days later while they searched for a hollowpoint feeding solution--Which was a completely new barrel with longer feed ramp.

   Apparently a decision was made by KT to resume PF-9 C model production, or maybe to just release those that were already produced before the freeze, in 2/07. These SN R0AXX to R0FXX C Models do NOT have the new barrels.

 I imagine the A or B models will be upgraded to C parts and converted to D Models.
 
   lbbennett is the first confirmed KTOGer to receive a new D model. She returned her PF-9  to her FFL  on 03/02/07. The BBT brought it back to her on 03/21/07. Congrats, Laura!

E MODELS:
 
UPDATE: As of 5/22 there have been 6 reports of PF9 problems with trigger going slack. It is caused by the trigger spring popping out of the trigger bar groove. So far--No definitive cause.

  The latest models, (Es) that will start with SN R0G00 (Probably April 07) are already being built with the new, longer and shallower feed ramp, (The one at the left) on the barrel:

 They may also have a new or altered magazine and a different slide lock tab system more akin to the P11.
 
UPDATE: ProModFan received SN R0GXX on March 27 2007. He is the first on KTOG to get one. The E models have started to arrive. So far there are no changes to magazine or slide lock.
 
UPDATE: As of 03/01/07 there have been more than 1600 PF9s delivered. So far, only 76 of these have come to KTOG.
 
UPDATE: As of 04/22/07 LIST PRICES have increased.

These are good for stealth, but Parkerization inside the barrel may cut bullet velocity some.
 
UPDATE: As of 5/02/07, more E models have been produced than Total A, B, and C production.
 
UPDATE: As of 5/10/07 more than 3600 have been distributed.
 
UPDATE: As of 5/19/07 more than 4300 PF9's distributed.

SIDENOTE: My new HC PF9 (R1Yxx) was born 6/12/07, was shipped 6/21 and arrived at the Dealer on 7/09. So, at least in this one case the PF9s gathered for at least a week before shipping and traveled for 18 days from factory to distributor to dealer. I was lucky enough to find it still there and buy it on 7/10.
 
   I am disappointed that 5 months have gone by and KT is still shipping PF9s with slide lock tabs that hardly touch follower and cut the notch away.
 
UPDATE: 7/12/07 A new trigger bar with deeper groove for trigger spring is introduced. This should eliminate the "Trigger spring pops out" malfunction.
I estimate that SNs R2C and up will have it.

UPDATE 8/2 R2Exx arrives at KT. This probably has the new deep-groove trigger bar in it. At least 8,200 PF-9s have been produced.
 
UPDATE: 8/23/07 more than 10,000 PF-9s have been produced. KTOGers own 328 of them.
 
UPDATE: 8/26 I expect any day now we'll see a SN R30xx. That will mark the passing of 10,200 PF9s built.
 
UPDATE 9/25/07: At least 11,400 PF9s have been produced.
 
UPDATE 9/26: After at least 15 confirmed KTOG instances of PF9 ejector pin walking out and jamming the hammer--KT has come up with a factory fix:
 
  The frame has been strengthened and thickened at the ejector pin hole, and the hole is partially covered so the pin cannot get at the hammer:

The fix would be under the "other" category in TPP's first post. basically more frame material is left around the pin and the hole is only drilled deep enough for the pin (Actually half the hole breaks free, so you can sort-of pop it out if necessary).

This will make it more difficult for you to replace the ejector, but it will be impossible for the pin to work it's way out and bind up the hammer. These new frames may allready be out on the streets. I know that some of the first batch of these new frames are being held specifically for repairs.

so if you call customer service and then send in your PF with a note stateing that the ejector pin is walking out, Your frame will be replaced with the new ejector-pin-securing-super-frame. Grin

I'll see if I can post a picture tomorrow.

 
   A major change to the FRAME will make this a new MODEL. Production PF9s with the new frame will be G Models. D or E models retrofitted with the new frame will become F Models.
 
   I estimate that the first production G Model will be SN R3S00, and we should see them in about 3 weeks. (10/17?) That's an S as in Sam, not a five. Perhaps ktwm will be kind enough to tell us the EXACT SN of the production change.

UPDATE 9/28:
 
   The F Model is a previous model factory retrofitted with the new non-slip-ejector-pin Frame. This upgrade will ONLY ever be accomplished by returning the miscreant gun to the factory.
 
KuduKing is the first KTOGer to report receiving a new F Model PF9 returned from the factory. Congrats KuduKing and thanks for sharing!

KTOG PF9 ownership reaches total of 400.
 
UPDATE 10/16/07:
 
It looks like KT has really ramped up PF9 production to about 3,000 per month.
 
UPDATE 12/23/07: It looks like the total PF9 production will pass 20,000 during 2007.
 
UPDATE 1/1/08 Several FTS nosedive jam malfunctions in G models have been reported lately. I wonder if some change was made that is producing these. FTS was the reason for the E model barrel change. We have not had these for a long time, but now they seem to be coming back.
 
UPDATE 1/4/08: KTOG PF9 ownership passes 500. Total PF9 production passed 20,000 by several hundred in 2007.
 
UPDATE: All PF9s manufactured after November 2007 do NOT have the little breakable frame piece in front of the hammer anymore.
 
UPDATE 3/08: All PF9s now come in a nice plastic box. No more white cardboard.
 
UPDATE 5/15/08: All PF-9s after SN R9800 will have a new trigger system that will NOT allow firing off the hammer block. NO MORE SHORT STROKE FAIL-TO-FIRES!

Keltec base 34 Serial Number system EXPLAINED:  
 
   The last two digits represent the numbers 0 to 99 and will always be numbers. To avoid confusion with the numbers one and zero, the letters "I" and "O" are not used. The system starts with the numbers 1-999 and then uses 24 letters before starting again with 0-9.

   I don't think ANY are going out until the new barrel is finished testing. IMO they HAVE shipped a few hundred that were built before the production halt--but they don't have the new barrels.
 
   It's looking like at least April before we see production with the new barrel. Ktwm said he would notify us what SN they start shipping new barrels on and I believe he will.

  The new barrel is being produced now, starting with SN R0G00. This SN and later will be E models. All A, B and C Models that are returned for barrel swaps will become D models.
