Where is it?  It AIN'T Here!

Went to the monthly fun show and there was narry an SU22 to be seen.  At the prices they were asking for everything else, it's just as well.  I saw a Charlie a CA and PLR16, all 3 marked at $669.

Have they even made a 2nd batch of these things yet?  When they do, I'll probably have to find one on line, pay an inflated price + shipping and FFL.  Has anyone heard anything about production?  KTWM?!  I'd love one for Christmas but that ain't looking to likely.  Huh

I've been having some more fun with my SU-22C. I'm running my own SU-22 gun porn thread.

I got the shorter 15 round Black Dog magazine in today. As always, good quality stuff from Black Dog. The stock folds over the 15 round mag and unfolds just as you'd expect, with no troubles at all. There is a wider part of the mag on the top that I believe engages the mag catch and it would need to be forced through the slot in the Charlie stock if you wanted to insert and remove mags while the stock is folded, but that's not a likely scenario from my perspective. I think most people will do all their magazine inserting and removal with the stock unfolded and then fold the stock over the inserted mag. From messing around with it, it seems likely that Kel-Tec will be offering an SU-22C soon. It's vurra nice!

I still need to order the skinny 30 round mag from Black Dog.

I had also installed a low cost but very nice vertical foregrip. I think it was $6 on sale at Midway. I haven't shot with it yet, but I like the way it feels and when dry firing it seemed to make smaller "groups". I'll do a little comparison shooting in the standing, seated and prone position during the next range trip, and if I think a vertical foregrip is worth keeping I'll order a lighter and shorter folding VFG.

And now... the pictures!

As shown in these pictures, with the Charlie stock, TruGlo 4X32 scope, VFG, and loaded 15 round magazine, the SU-22C weighs 5.35 pounds. When I remove the VFG, the weight drops to 5.15 pounds. There are lighter .22s, but the SU-22C has the best fun to weight ratio, IMO.

Dang! My trigger finger is itching again. Unfortunately, if I was the local weatherman, I'd have been fired this week for saying "sucky" too many times. As soon as the rain stops, I'm going shooting! I bought another 1100 rounds of Federal .22 ammo today, and I plan on using some of that soon.  Cool

Still looking...  There is one on Guns America for $430.  Then I found one on Gun Broker for which the auction had ended.  It did not sell at $360 - no bids.  That was probably a good price, huh?   Huh

There are people paying almost $360 for the PLR-22 (maybe more). I think $360 for an SU-22 is probably a good price, particularly if there aren't a lot of other costs for inflated shipping, credit card fees, etc.

I know it's easy to think about a $189 Ruger 10/22 or a tricked out $360 10/22 and think the SU-22 seems over priced, but the SU-16 heritage makes the SU-22 an awesome and very high quality .22. Buying quality only hurts once. Besides, I tell my 10/22 buddies, "Can your 10/22 do this?" as I fold the SU-22C in half.  Cool

If you can wait, there should be an SU-22C from the factory soon, if you want one to match your SU-16C. Waiting is difficult, and you seem to be deep in the throes of a mighty gun lust.

Like my PLR-16 and my SU-16, the SU-22 really smoothed out and runs like a Swiss watch after about 1000 rounds. If you could shoot my little SU-22, I think you wouldn't hesitate to spend the $360. It's a couple of tons of fun.

The only down side is loading those little .22 cartridges with my big fumbling thumbs. I wish there was a tab on the side of the magazine that allowed my left thumb to pull down on the magazine follower as my right hand dropped in the little .22 cartridges, like the magazine on my Beretta NEOS .22 pistol. I just checked and I think I might be able to disassemble the 15 and 27 round mags, drill a hole into the mag follower, tap a hole for a #6-32 stainless socket head cap screw and reassemble the magazine. Then I could load one round at a time and mark the position of the hole on the side of the magazine and play connect the dots to Dremel and file a channel in the side of the magazine. Install the socket head SS cap screw and the socket head is the tab that my thumb could use to lower the magazine follower. It even seems reasonably ergonomic for left handed folks. Darn! I didn't have time for a little project like that today. I'd try it first on the 27 round magazine. I haven't even shot the 15 rounder yet! Pictures to follow? If this works as well as I think it might, modifying Black Dog magazines might be a good niche business for someone with a CNC milling machine.

A mag loader would help a lot, but the Black Dog mag loader is $120 and I can't talk myself into it, even though I'm sure it's nice. I had just sent an email to Guy at maglula when I saw your post in this thread. Guy is the son of the maglula father and son team, and maglula is the Israeli company that makes great magazine loaders/unloaders. I have three of their mag loaders and they're the best. They sell for $20-$30. I requested a maglula mag loader for the .22 Ciener and Black Dog magazines. I think that segment of the magazine industry will grow a lot in 2009 as ammo prices increase and more AR shooters install Ciener uppers and Kel-Tec ramps up production of the PLR-22 and SU-22.

Yea, the mag loader situation there sure has a big hole in it.  What happened to the cheaper version BD was supposed to come up with?  Did they do the math and figure enough folks would cough up $120 to make up the difference?  undecided

I was just shopping at Mal*Wart and I usually stop by the ammo counter to see if they have any stock. They were often out of most ammo I wanted, even before the recent gun craziness. Anyway, they had some Federal Target Match Performance ammo for .22 LR today. It's also labeled AutoMatch. It was $13.47 for a bulk pack of 325, so it's definitely a bit of a premium over regular Federal bulk pack value ammo, but I hoped it'd be a good combination of accuracy and value. I bought a couple of boxes. It rang up as $14.47, but the clerk voided it and sold it to me for the posted price. The online price seems to be about $14.50, or $13.20 in ten pack bricks.

Anybody used this in a PLR-22 or SU-22 yet? I opened a box and took a look and there seemed to be a lightly waxed lead bullet, and I was disappointed to see that it was crimped in a manner similar to the problematic Remington Golden Bullet. It was a slightly tighter crimp but it still wobbled slightly when I applied a bending force, and the bullet still rotated although not as easily as the Golden Bullet ammo.

This ammo generally gets very good reviews at Midway with most people claiming 1 MOA or less, but I figured if the SU-22 didn't feed it I'd shoot it in the Beretta NEOS pistol which seems to feed anything, then I read a couple of reviews at the end that say their NEOS feeds anything except this ammo. I should be shooting tomorrow and I'll give it a try and see if it feeds, and how accurately it shoots in the SU-22.

My Ruger 22/45 MkII functions well with that ammo (and everything else I've ever tried). Accuracy is good, too.

Saw two SU-22's at a dealer at the last gun show-consecutive serial numbers, no less. Checked the front sight on one. It was crooked. After I showed it to him, he looked at the other one he had, and said "This is even worse, I'm sending these back." He was asking $399, which I would have paid for one that was perfect, just to get it and be done with it. I guess I'll check on my standing order and make sure it's still standing. Post SHOT Show production is likely to be better than what's out there now.

I shot the Federal Target Match Performance ammo yesterday and it seemed pretty good. It seemed more reliable than the regular maroon box Federal bulk pack. I think they put some primer material in all the rounds of the more expensive stuff. Smiley The cheap stuff also seemed to have widely varying powder charge, or maybe that's just a function of varying primer material, but the sound could be anything from a sharp crack down to a little pop. Not so with the AutoMatch ammo. It sounded more consistent.

I still don't have a shooting bench at the nearby private range, so the only way to get decent accuracy is to get into a prone position, and I had a cold and didn't feel like repeatedly lying on the ground and getting up to check the targets, so I just shot from a sitting position off the tailgate of my pickup truck. The wind was blowing, the truck suspension was creaking, there's a lot of parallax in the scope at 50 yards, I was sick.... I'm sure I can think of more excuses for not shooting well, but I could hit a 20 ounce plastic pop bottle impaled on a stick almost every time at 50 yards.

At 4.1 cents per round for the bulk pack AutoMatch ammo, it may be worth the difference in price compared to the 2.7 cents per shot Federal bulk pack. I'll do a real comparison test some day. For now though, at least I know it feeds and fires well in the SU-22.

I forgot to mention in my last post that I shot the new 15 round Black Dog magazine and it's very nice. It's roughly the length of a 20 round AR mag. It still seems weird that the single stack .22 mags hold fewer rounds than the double stack AR mags. The new mag feeds great and has the same high quality look and feel of the larger mags. My SU-22 was from the first batch, so my original magazine doesn't have the bolt hold open. The new mag has the bolt hold open magazine follower, and I like that feature.

I think I'm going to try the skinny 15 round magazine. I'm not as interested in a mag that looks and feels like an AR mag. I think smaller and lighter would make me happier.

Does the 15rd hold-open activate the rifle's bolt lock or simply block the bolt open?

It simply blocks the bolt open, so you avoid dry-firing on an empty chamber. If you then manually latch the bolt back with the guns bolt stop before pulling out the empty mag, you avoid the bolt slamming closed as you pull the magazine out and them it is easier to chamber the first round of the next mag.

The Black Dog magazines with the bolt hold open feature have a magazine follower with a tab that sticks up to catch the bolt and keep it from closing. They hold the bolt almost completely open, but the manual bolt latch holds the bolt open a little more.

The bolt hold open magazines are handy to let the shooter know that the mag is empty so you don't get that last "click" to realize the mag is empty. That's a slight hassle if I'm plinking, but less of a problem if I'm shooting five shots on each target when I'd count and know the mag was empty.

As you probably surmised from your question, having the mag follower hold the bolt back means that it's more difficult to eject the empty mag, and when you do, the bolt slams forward. The proper procedure would be to recognize the mag is empty, pull back on the bolt and lock it in the far rear position with the manual bolt latch, then eject the empty mag.

An older mag can be upgraded to hold the bolt open by simply replacing the mag followers.

Edit To Add - Weird that almost four hours after the question was posted, ktwm and I cross posted. Lunchtime in the eastern time zone, I guess.
