Qualified with my 9mm SUB-2000!
10/15/08 at 18:16:30

Had two days of weapons training and qualifying this week. Normally I would shoot my AR-15 but magnifying optics aren't allowed on patrol rifles and I've put a scope on it and some other goodies in anticipation of some advanced rifle training. That left me with the choice to borrow somebody else's rifle or use my SUB-2000, I chose the latter and I was VERY impressed with it's performance.

We shot about 250rds through our long guns over the two days at ranges from 100yds down to 5yds, mostly 50yds and under. We did a lot of moving and shooting, transitioning from long gun to handgun, and multiple positions - standing, kneeling, prone - plus shooting from behind barricades and from the inside of vehicles. My SUB-2000 had zero mechanical failures, I did have some ammo problems with Remington 115gr ball. The primers are either really hard or set deeper than WWB and Magtech because I had 8 or 9 fail to fire in spite of good primer strikes. I was able to run the same rounds through my handguns and they fired so I won't be using Remington anymore. I did get a little extra practice clearing failures and transitioning to my pistol so I guess there is a bright side to it, that and the fact that it wasn't a gun issue. I wasn't alone with problems though, the S.O. had brand new Bushmaster AR-15's and several of them had some teething pains.

The gun was pretty accurate considering the sights and ergonomics. We use standard FBI style "Q" targets so we only count hits, no numerical score. You are allowed 4 misses but all head shots have to score. The qualification course is 36rds, shooting at 100, 50, 25, and 15 yards, plus shooting while advancing and retreating between 15 and 5 yards. You shoot the course twice, back to back. Shooting from 100yds was difficult because the sights are so crude but from 50 yds in they were more than adequate. I shot 34/36 and 35/36 and outshot several of the other guys with their AR's.

So, my SUB-2000 is now an official addition to my duty gear and will be riding in my bag in the passenger seat whenever I'm working. I'm comfortable with it's reliability and function and confident that I can hit man sized targets effectively out to at least 100yds and would not hesitate to take head shots under 50yds. I'm going to work on fitting a small red dot like a Doctor Optic or JPoint to it to make those long shots a little easier. I'm also going to fit one to the scope on my AR-15 so that I can also qualify with it on the same course. It would be nice to have the SUB-2000 in the front seat with me and the AR in the back in case the sh!t really hit the fan.

Actually that is pretty cool.  It's like coming home as this role is exactly what the Sub was originally designed for.  Back then it was the Sub9 and a little beefier, but this is coming back to roots for sure.  Congratulations!

Without mentioning the name or location, what type of agency are you with?

I work for a small town on the coast of Maine. I am a constable and municipal shellfish conservation warden (and ACO but that part sucks).
I also worked for the S.O. for a while but didn't have much time to give them so now it's just the town. However, because they are the largest agency in the area everybody that works for the towns trains with them because we don't have the resources or personnel to do it ourselves. We also have to provide our own weapons and gear, although my town reimburses me for everything I need except guns, those are mine.

Does my heart good to see a Subbie doing the job it was designed for.
