touch up paint for sights
03/16/09 at 13:53:49

I bumped my rear sight and the soft plastic folded over into the white dot.
I'm going to smooth it out with a file and I'm looking for something to fix the dot so it's round again.

What works on these sights? nail polish? model paint?

thanks!

Call Kel Tec and get another rear site.  It may even be covered under their lifetime warranty.  If not, their cheap anyway...

No I don't currently use them. I've been looking for some night sights or some good alternatives for my XD-M 9mm. I looked at TruGlo TFO, Dawson night sights, those above which caught my eye as a good repair item or even a brighter alternative to regular sights, Heine sights, and some CCW style low-pro front sights with no rear sights. I STILL haven't made up my mind darn it! There is some good stuff out there, all with pro's and con's it seems but I liked the paint on or stickers for the simple fact that it doesn't eliminate stock sights so you know it's still a durable set you have. For colors, I recommend anything closer to green than red on the spectrum. The human eye sees green easier which is why the trend is turning towards green in lasers. It's closer to the center of the spectrum of light and easier to acquire than red. Otherwise, sorry I didn't have some more practical experience to share! Someday, when I can make up my mind!! O! Photo-luminescent paint too! I forgot that. The Navy uses it as do others, but it's a greenish paint that absorbs and holds electrons for HOURs! That looked like a good option too, which MAY be the one I go with. Oops!

Hay Thanks! really didn't know about the color green being picked up easier by the eye. So I guess you could go green in the front and rear? or what do you think you obviously have more experence with this then me. Anyone else have any suggestions for a green or color combination for the front and rear sights.

Call Kel Tec, they sent me a new set after mine started to yellow. I tried the whiteout and touch up paint, no luck. Kel Tec's customer service is outstanding.

Ouch, difficult choice. For me I like a yellowish back sight and a green front. Or, I like the sights on my Glock as shown below. I prefer the difference in color for rapid acquisition or the "U" shaped back with the front post in the middle, it seems to help me line on the POA/POI better. BUT that's why there are so many choices out there. I seem to like the "fill in the blank spot and shoot" style sights.

Yeah those do look pretty cool BUT check out this link about sure sight that came up on the XD-M forum I lurk on. I don't know if they are still offering to sell to people but it looks like they just take your money and slide away into the night. They screwed over a number of people there, but early on they were doing legit business so who knows what the real deal is. One guy even has them on and has a pic of them up and he loves them!
