PLR-22 Fore-end fit on SU-22?
09/07/09 at 11:36:41

Hey, doesn't anyone know if the PLR-22 and SU-22 fore-ends are compatible with each other? They seem to have different part numbers. Is it just the mounting hardware maybe that's different?

I believe they are identical. I have a PLR-16, a PLR-22, and an SU-22CA. The same (optional) forend fits both PLR's. The SU-22 comes standard with the forend. This forend interchanges with the one for the pistols. The only difference between the upper receiver/barrel assemblies of the PLR-22 and the SU-22 that I can tell is the overall length of the barrel. Those extra parts in the picture on the Kel-Tec site for the rifle forend must be for installation on an SU-16, and wouldn't be needed on the SU-22.

Incidentally, my SU-22 had to go in for a repair, and when it returned, the forend nut was made out of plastic-covered steel, not the plastic-covered aluminum of the past. Anyone else notice this? I know that I prefer the aluminum nut since it is lighter and can't damage the threads on the barrel if I cross thread it.

I could see the plastic covered steel Vs. solid steel being better, the knerling in the steel gets rusty easy but the plastic over the steel is a great idea, i'll keep an eye out for one.

Do any of you guys have pictures of the kit for the PLR's?  I just installed the forend kit on my SU16, but saw the aluminum kit for the PLR, and am thinking of trying to make it fit.

Thanks

Yes, it does.

When I saw the polymer/steel nut that my rifle was returned with, I ordered an extra forend kit mainly to get the polymer/aluminum nut, afraid that they might be discontinued. There are sources other than Kel-Tec and I went to one of these (RRarms, IIRC) because I wanted older stock that would have the aluminum nut. It's not a big deal on the rifle, but substituting a steel nut for aluminum is not something I want to do to a pistol that is already a bit front heavy for my liking. (I'm speaking mainly of my PLR-16 which has a Levang linear compensator mounted on the barrel. I don't have any muzzle devices on my PLR-22s--yet Wink)
