Ultradot Pan AV
10/26/09 at 01:38:59

Hey guys,

I'm new to the forums but heard about how great the SU-16 is. My current plan is to get a C model with a YHM flash suppressor and an Ultradot Pan AV. However... I've never used or seen the Ultradot before. This might sound rather odd, but the reason I'm interested in the Ultradot is actually because of Call of Duty 4 (it seemed to be the sight affixed to a rifle in that game). And while that game is by no means a simulator of any kind, it did seem to me that have that wide field of view with the Pan AV was really helpful. I've only ever used a red-dot sight before on an m249 which is not a weapon I've used extensively so my experience with red-dots is limited. Would you guys recommend a different non magnifying red dot over the ultradot? I want to keep the su-16c as an ultralight rifle. The other reason I was considering the ultradot is the possibility of affixing it to the side of a large magnifying scope on a rare occasion.

What are the mounting options available for scopes that allow the iron sights to still be used? What are the drawbacks of those mounting options?

Here's a link to the ultradot Pan AV:

Many thanks!

Man in my day they made me use the irons on my M249 (when they'd actually give me ammo for the stupid thing that is)  Wink

The good thing about that style of sight is the ability to use both eyes (with practice) and the wide field of view. However I've seen a few break when the window got caught on something. No magnification either and they don't tend to play well with seperate magnifiers. But for lightweight general purpose scope they seem to be a good choice. I use this one http://www.opticsplanet.net/bsa-optics-tactical-red-dot-w-illuminated-red-green- blue-dot-stsrgbd30.html (if you want to mount things on the side) and of course you can't go wrong with the Vortex Strikefire.

As for the mounting options you can always use a high mount like the one included with the vortex (high mount version) or get a riser like this http://www.sogarmory.com/Product.aspx?ProductId=101696&Catid=60&ParentId =-1 (just an example). The problem with this is the more you add the more it weighs and if your trying to keep weight down it becomes counter productive. Plus there is the big difference in cheek weld and height of the overall rifle. Good luck in choosing an optic.

I like that quote a lot, thunderbolt.  Who said it?

Madkap, the popular choice for that style of sight is the Eotech, which has a metal shroud to protect the window from abuse, however they're extremely expensive.  Apparently, the Bushnell HOLO Sight is exactly the same, but without the armor and costs less.  There's another less expensive hologram-type type sight out there that's a little more heavy duty, but I can't remember it right now.  I'll post a link when I get home and find out exactly what it is.

haha, I had a friend who loves video games, well, upon playing COD4 he was inspired by the Rem700 and went out and purchased one. I told him he should look into knowing how to shoot first...well, he didnt listen and took the .308 out to the range.....came back with a ring around his eye.. I LMBO!! Anyways, after having my share of laughs I spent a good amount of time teaching him how to shoot. Now, he's a addict and wants to start reloading...uh oh. I guess its a good thing?

Anyways, OP's question. I have one of those on my AR-15. Works good I like it, but your not going to be getting anything better then 3 moa unless you get something better quality.

I'm almost embarrassed by it... but the truth is I can't tell a difference between that and the ultradot... can you?

Was at the cheap mall (yes, even in Shanghai there is a "cheap" mall!) buying a pair of 3-9x40 IR scopes for a buddy, and saw that Ultradot knock-off as well; got them down to 100 RMB, but said maybe next week.  I think I'll pick one up and see how well it works, but it's got the adjustable dots, red/green illumination (variable intensity), etc.  Looks pretty good, I guess for $14 I'll see how well it holds up; could be nice on the Ruger pistol if nothing else!

Heh...  I'll be at the market again on Sunday, I'll pick up a half dozen if they have them!  Seems like I could make a few people happy...

BTW, here's some pictures of what it is:

This is the "beefier" metal one, no plastic here!  All aluminum machining, good quality rail screws, etc.  Even the threading of the allen wrench adjustments was solid and clean.  Four different reticles, two colors (green and red), three intensities per color.  They said it was tough, as good as Aimpoint or Ultradot, and that it could be abused.  Even challenged them if I could drop it, said "mei wan qi" - no problem.  So I did - 3 feet onto concrete.  Small nick, that was it.

So I grabbed the two good ones they had, and told them to get a few more in on Sunday.  Got them at 300 RMB each.  I'm glad to pay 3X the price for the solid aluminum construction that took a 3 foot fall on to concrete.  Nothing worse than having a sight fall apart!  Also threw in two lithium 2032 batteries.

And no, they're not really Aimpoints...Wink

Last photo shows one of the green reticles down the view - crisp and clean.

Also picked up two of these, one for my Susie, and one for a buddy...  200 RMB each.  Plenty bright with the reticle illumination, 3-9 range, and really fine adjustments on the crosshairs.  Have a different reticle, a range-finding reticle inside (mil-dot cross-hairs with multiple range gradient lines below the center).

I mounted a Strikefire on my 16CA and was low at 25yds. by 2-3" just trying to get on paper. That was with the elevation at full stop (this was using a "hunting mount"). If you use a high mount with the Strikefire on your SU, based on experience, you will have trouble obtaining zero inside 200 yds. The issue is that the higher the center of your optics are, the greater the angle to meet the muzzle in space. It's just math. I did figure, mathematically, that the further I moved the mount back on the top rail (still the low-mount), the smaller the degree of separation from the muzzle. I'm now 1" low @ 25, DOT @100. Don't buy the hi-mount. Call or email Liberty Optics, it took us a week to figure the whole deal out. Wink

Who said that we'd never use that geometry we learned in high school? Smiley  Perfect example to get the kids to pay attention - this can help you sight in your scope!
