Mobil 1?
10/28/09 at 13:26:00

I work in a sporting goods dept. and a customer said instead of Hoppes gun oil he uses Mobil One instead. He said it was recommended to him by a local gun smith. He claims that since it is synthetic it would endure more heat, less friction and the dirt will not be attracted to the oil. Has anybody else heard of this? He said he has been using it about a year now with no problems!  Shocked

I have heard of using motor oil on gun components, but claiming that it won't attract dirt sounds pretty much like a bucket of crap from China....that is, far-fetched.
One could probably use olive oil to lube firearms with few problems, other than smelling like a greek restaurant. Motor oil generally being thicker, it would seem that there would be quite a film even with a good wipedown. If one really wanted to be cheap, they could just get some Rotella or Wally world by the quart. That would last for awhile, unless you have a collection more like my dad's.

I use Mobil 1 on some of my firearms. It does a good job of lubrication, but it will attract dirt just like anything else. My carry P3 still gets dust and lint in it and needs periodic cleaning regardless of use.

Is it not a concern that motor oil will burn when ignited?

I would use Mobile 1 in a pinch, but Firearm specific products would be my preference.

I have used a mayonnaise, peanut butter and used oil from my truck's dipstick to lube my firearms in a pinch.

Before anybody asks: wading in a creek, slipped, caught in a rainstorm, just forgot to bring lube on a shooting excursion.

Flash points ;
Mobil 1 392 deg F
Hoppe's  Lubricating Oil  425 deg F
Not really enough difference  to worry about.

Yeah, but what's the flash point of mayonnaise?

I thought that this was a far fetched claim on Mobil 1. I have been using Hoppes and Rem Oil since I was first introduced to the great sport of shooting. that was about 53 years ago. These oils have not failed me. I do clean and oil after every time I used my fire arms. I believe the saying "take care of it and it will take care of you"!  Cheesy

I tried Rem Oil after reading a test on gun oils, and now I use it on darn near everything. Front door used to creak loudly, and graphite was only a temporary and messy fix. Sprayed some Rem Oil on it and it hasn't creaked since. Then I sprayed it on all the interior doors, which would creak if you opened them slow enough. Can't get them to creak at all now and they swing like the hinges are made of butter. Rem Oil has graduated from my gun box to the pantry.

If I need oil, I use RemOil.  Or pretty much any other gun oil I happen to have on hand.  If I need grease, I use Valvoline synthetic high temperature bearing grease.  Apart from a light coat of oil in the barrel and a drop on the recoil spring, my PF-9 works quite well with Valvoline on the rails, hammer, barrel pivot point and any other parts needing lubrication.  On a carry gun I believe grease is better for most parts - it doesn't run or drip like oils can.

I have read once or twice on SigForum about people using some type of Mobil1 grease (until then, I actually didn't realize Mobil1 made a grease)

A couple people I know use Mobil1 [oil] on their AR15 with no apparent down-side.  That said, these are not high round-count weapons, and they are not duty guns.  They are low round-count range guns.

Pat Rogers has run AR15s lubed with Vagisil through his punishing carbine courses.  To make a point.  The point is... use something.  Wink

I've had not trouble with regular grease in some parts, 15W40 Chevron fleet oil in other places, and 3 & 1 oil in other spots....makes not difference...

I use Mobil 1 on all but one of my firearms.  I do not use it on my Sig Mosquito because it has to have a thinner lubricant to function well.  I have found it to work better than any gun oil that I have tried and it sure is cheap.

Case in point I did not clean or lubricate my AR for 3 months after firing 136 rounds and leaning it up in a corner.  The oil did not move.  It was still right where it was supposed to be.

I'm not sure about staying cleaner but right now it has 170 rounds and 3 weeks since last cleaning/lubrication and it hardly appears to have been fired.  It's not a piston gun just a regular old AR.
