Fluff & Buffed my PF9, can't figure out firing pin
10/31/09 at 11:23:34

So last night I disassembled my PF9, cleaned it and attacked the project of sanding a few areas, according to the following website:

http://goldenloki.com/gunsmith/keltec/fullrp.htm

I guess I wasn't paying attention when I removed the screw for the extractor.  This released the tension on my firing pin, it ended up sticking out the back side about 1/2 an inch.  I noticed this when i tried tightening down the extractor screw, and it wouldn't go in all the way.  I pushed the pin in and was able to tighten the screw.  Obviously the pin nor the spring flew anywhere, there was still tension on the pin from the spring.

I'd like to de-bur the firing pin holes with a drill bit, as explained in the provided link.  For the life of me, I can't figure out how to actually remove the pin and spring from the slide assembly.  Am I blind?  If anyone could maybe explain how to do it, it'd be greatly appreciated!

Also, any recommendation on a dry lube to use for the firing pin, and where to purchase it?

Lastly, step 12 of the provided link is a little foggy to me:

"12. no pic. Using a drill bit a few sizes larger than the firing pin hole, lightly chamfer the firing pin hole on the breech face side. This will make it more difficult for debris and grime to build up."

So somehow I should be able to position a drill bit at the breech side, and I'm supposed to, I dunno, drill a light recess around the existing hole?  That's how it sounds to me, I just want to make sure before I take that on.

Thanks in advance!

The extractor screw is what holds the FP in place. The screw must be removed to get the FP and its spring out. Once removed the FP will fall out the back of the slide. As far as chamfering the channel, all you want to do is select a drill bit the same size as the channel. All you do is run the bit in and out a few times to make sure there are not burrs that would interfere with the FP.

Installation is just the reverse. You can set the extractor, spring, and screw in place and loosely tighten the screw to holdthe three in place. Then insert the FP making certain the flat slot in the FP is toward the screw. You'll need to push the FP in to keep it in the right spot so the extractor screw can be tighten all te way without damaging the FP or the screw.

I hope this helps.

That step you use a drill bit by hand on the breach face side to give the firing pin hole a slight chamfer.
GL is a member here and maybe he'll see the post and offer his advice.

I use some Hoppes dry lube, I think I bought it at my LGS or Cabelas. Some KTOGers use silicone spray also.

OK thanks for the advice everyone!  I also noticed a stickied disassembly section on the front page, not sure how I overlooked that!  Now to pick up some dry lube and go to work!

FWIW, the serial on my PF9 is an RJK, which according to the serial number thread, would be in the 63,100 range of guns manufactured.  I may call in to KT and see if I can get a mfr date.  I'm assuming it's a pretty recently mfr'd gun, and shouldn't require any upgrades.  The dealer just recieved it the day before I purchased it, last week.

Looks like billjohnso20 and CJP32 have got you covered.

A very light coat of gun oil or CLP on the firing pin and spring will work fine too.

It is a lot harder to write instructions than it looks.
When I already know how to do something, any drivel I type out makes perfect sense to me   Cheesy

Best, GL

Well I got her figured out!  I had to pry the firing pin out with some needle nose pliers.  Was pretty simple really.  I was just reluctant to before.

GL: Thanks for providing your tutorials, tips and pointers on a public domain.  All I've done before is simple field strip / cleaning / lubing of my guns.  It feels good to be able to go a little bit further and not break something in the process.  Lots of invaluable information, thanks!

Also, FWIW, aside from smoothing out my feed ramp, outside of the barrel and the inside of the slide, everything on my gun seemed OK from the get go.  I've never worked on any other KelTec, but I didn't notice any excess of manufacturing debris or notable rough spots beyond the previously stated.  Perhaps their manufacturing process is still improving Smiley  Will see how she shoots tomorrow.

I just fluffed and buffed mine as well, and it seemed to be in good shape too. No real burrs in the slide  grooves, etc.

Thanks for the guide!  I bought mine used, it is one of the newer ones with the metal slide release etc.

I had a few light strikes last time at the range.  Sure enough I can see brass colored shavings inside the firing pin hole.  I'll have to get it all cleaned out this weekend, hopefully this will solve my problem.  The gun never failed to cycle but I got 3 light strikes out of about 40 cartridges which is unacceptable.

I wonder if the tip of the fp maybe sharp rather then rounded and is causing the brass in the fp channell? It maybe scraping some shavings off the primer and pulling them back into the channell. My pin is rounded and I have never observed any brass. What do think?

I'm wondering more about the roughness of the FP hole causing it to shave some brass.  Looking at my Beretta 92 after reading something on their website praising the virtures of how their FP hole is radiused and smoothed, I tried to do the same on my PF-9.  I took a felt polishing point and some polishing compound and with a pin vise and extention of the dremel mandrel, and polished away.  Couldn't really move any metal, but I softened the edges of the chamfer that is there.  The jury is still out if I really made any improvement, however.  Have only been out once since, and I don't know if it made a difference - went "bang" every time, so I didn't hurt it.  I didn't open the hole or anything.

Would love to have a tool to properly radius the hole and then polish it.

Fairly light strikes seem to be the nature of these guns.  Nothing I've fired looks remotely like the solid hits from my 92 or S&W's.  You just have to make sure to pick ammo that the gun can work with.

As far as brass in the FP channel, mine has only done it once. I cleared it at the range. A single piece of brass had gotten in the hole. My firing pin isn't sharp or overly pointed. In fact, IIRC, it is the extractor that creates the brass pieces that can sometimes get in the FP channel. I have even wondered if the ejector might also play into this equation. I do know however that KTs are not the only ones that do it. My wife had an XD that produced copious amounts of brass filings for the first 500 rounds. Also, the two 40S&W PPS's we own also produce small amounts of brass particles. All it takes are for these pieces to migrate and any gun can experience a light strike. I've even known of 1911s doing the same thing.
