Sandpaper-Sawdust-Steel Wool-Marlin 60 Makeover

Got a bottom dollar ,bottom of the barrel( hey it might have been in a barrel  undecided ) Marlin M 60 .22 a few months back an figure it is time to bring some life to this 50 $ box of wood and steel. Got the thing on GB , cheap (might a been 50 w/ shipping  undecided ). Bore is the only good thing going so far. The original owner never even removed the paper labels from the stock  Shocked Had to sand them off.
Here is a pic from the GB ad;

Barrel was pitted and someone took some  # 100 sandpaper to it  lips sealed Any ways I like a good challenge and am off work a week or so till the Doc gets me fixed up. So along with some movies I picked up this week this little gem is gonna have me picking it apart. Hopefully it turns out better than the mess I received  Cheesy
I will be using Dura Bake 'Gun Blue' for the finish and just a light sanding on the stock and a spray on satin clear finish.
More pics later...

Good thing I don't charge myself by the hour on this...

like the custom barrel hangers  Grin

Got 4+ hours on working on the pitting. Almost gave up on the mag tube but decided to give it some more elbow grease Tongue
Stock is sanded and wiped down and in the garage with a coat of spray on satin, morning will tell if that will pass if not I'v got a can or two of minwax color satin around here somewhere...

some picture updateds from later post;

A hint for beginners ,put your parts in a zip lock bag(label them if they won't be opened for a while) if they can't be left on your work bench/coffee table;

Got a functional polish on the top/back and bottom of the bolt and just a bit more on the front  Cool ;

Joe, I strongly hope you will write up your efforts in detail so they may serve as instruction for less experienced members here.  I am especially interested in your treatment of the pitting and refinishing of the metal as I have a Makarov pistol that could use some of the same remedy.  I have seen articles on rebuilding sailboats in which the writer seemingly spent as much time on the writing as he did on working on the boat, but it made for fascinating and informative reading.

Paul , not much to do on the pitting problem as these were too deep to consider re-bluing. I bought some Dura Bake as soon as I bought this gun.Figured it would give the best coverage for the pitting.

Click image to enlarge

 I sanded the barrel and mag tube with 220 grit then 320 grit by hand and 400 grit with the Dremel. Gotta go slow and easy with the Dremel as ya can over do it quick Shocked. This thing had some deep ,bad areas. I will finish tomorrow sanding by hand with some 4oo grit paper and then follow up with 600. Then a good cleaning with some Klean Strip, a TSP substitute. Then a light coat of gray primer. After that dries , re-sand and re-primer till the pits are gone/smooth. Then I'll finish up with the Dura Bake , then a short trip into the oven to set the coating. I'll take some more pics too if I can remember to stop and get em...

Speaking of which, the wood side of this project is progressing;

but, always a but, got some dark areas that the finish brought back up to the surface. Gonna be sanding this back down tomorrow and go for another try  Tongue

You're tempting me to mess with the old Glenfield version I have. I really think it would probably be better left alone though.

I have come to love refinishing old beat up arms.  You can get them cheap- the supplies you need to refinish then are inexpensive- you don't need many tools and you can finish out a project in a weekend.  You don't need a work shop- I do my work on a back porch table. When you are done you have something that you worked on and can use for target work or hunting for years to come.  Great hobby.  Looking forward to seeing your finished project.

This morning has been productive (that is after I found that can of Dura Bake I bought several months back  Roll Eyes ) Got the first thin coat applied and got the stock out hanging in the sun. This afternoon I figure on doing a good cleaning on the trigger and bolt groups and maybe a light F&B.

Also put your supplies in a place where you can find them when ya need em and not waste an hour looking (like I had to today)  Tongue

You guys are making me want to go find some cheap guns to make over.

Maybe I'll re-do the stock on my great grandfather's bolt action 16ga.  It's pretty ugly but I love that old gun.

I can't wait to see your finished result.  I love to see an old piece of machinery brought back to life and nothing has more spirit than a .22 rifle.

Looks good Burley. My wife designated an area in the house for me to do refurbs. She got tired of me having stuff all over the place, using the kitchen sink, bathroom sink, dinner table, etc.

I have a shop outside and an outdoor deck and table. But the shop is for reloading and larger projects. The deck table doubles as my bench rest. Grin

+1 to the venerable .22. I have had more fun over the last 2 years picking up cheap .22's and shooting them than I have had in a long time.

Started a clean up and F&B on the innards. Got a functional polish on the top/back and bottom of the bolt and just a bit more on the front  Cool ;

Well the barrel is cooling and the mag tube is done  Smiley
I wish I had took a pic of the pits in the tube, you'd have thought I was nuts to refinish it. Now  ya can't even see the bad stuff. Great product and pretty easy to use.

Pancho,
well the wife new she had a gun guy back before we married  Grin
She don't mind me using space as long as it ; don't displace her/run her out with fumes/stain anything/screw up dinner... pretty much do as I please after that. Course I didn't tell her this finish was 'bake on' and involved her oven  Roll Eyes  I took care of those details after her bed time  Cheesy
We might be moving next year and a full blown shop is part of that deal along with a FFL and a few $ to start up a small country shop. Plan is to work into a part time retirement a few years down the road but I want to start small and build it up. Been planning this 25 years, gotta get started sometime  Smiley
