ear protection help
11/04/09 at 13:20:22

My first post so I hope it does what I want it to...
I sure would like to hear what the members of this fine site use for ear protection when shooting. Industrial ear plugs don't seem to be of much help.
I see ear muffs from $10 to $300. As a retired teacher, I sure can't afford the upper end equipment. I don't get to shoot near as much as I'l like to but I do need some "stop the noise" help.
Thanks to you all

I have a couple of sets of the low-end, inexpensive 'earmuff' type hearing protection.  One is a standard type and one (the set my wife picked out for her use) folds/collapses down.  The folding type is a little lighter and not as bulky and work just as well.  Both types work well but aren't the most comfortable things in the world.  They are a little bulky and kind of hot/a little sweaty in warm weather.  I use them when I will need to take off/put on my hearing protection a lot (as in outdoor shooting when there is also a good bit of conversing, etc. going on.)  When I am just shooting, I often use the 'squishy' foam earplugs (I like the Winchester brand that I can get at Walmart - a pack of several of them only cost a couple of bucks.)  You have to use those correctly - roll them between your fingers to compress the tapered end then insert them into your ears - but they work just fine, for me.  The advantage, there, is that they are lightweight and almost 'unnoticeable' to wear.

Do like R. Lee Ermey on Lock N' Load and stick a shell casing in each hear. An empty 9mm case works great for me Wink

I have the Browning 30 dBA muffs that I bought a long time ago, but a buddy picked up the Midway USA clones and they're just as good - well worth the $22 he paid.  If outdoors, I'll wear just those; if indoors I'll add some generic foam plugs for further attenuation.  My ears are my job/life, so I don't screw with them...

For most people, the Midway muffs are plenty.

I always use double protection. Cheap foam plugs under either regular $30 muffs, or under a pair of active $60 or so Silencio muffs.

Ditto on the doubling up. I use cheap foam earplugs with a NRR of 30 under a cheap set of passive earmuffs. The plugs block most of the sound, but it is important to be protected from bone conducted sounds as well, so earmuffs are a must.

Not sure how well the cheaper ear defs last.  But just to say I have a pair of low-profile (made to go under a combat helmet) Peltors that I was issued about 14 years ago.  They still work well and are in great condition.
I would also re-iterate the double ear protection, especially at an indoor range, where you also get a lot more high-pitched noise then at an outdoor range.

Check Lowes and Home Depot for ear protection.  They carry 26 - 28db sets (intended for industrial use) for much less than gun shops.

All your suggestions are greatly appreciated. My hearing is gone south pretty much so I need to try to keep what little is remaining.
Thanks again for your replies.

Harbor Freight has electronic muffs for $20, $15 on sale.

Looks like they are on sale now.

Stores and the web don't share the same sales all the time so print off a picture to get the same price at the store. Heck, the flyers you get at home don't match the stores sales. You have to take the flyer to the store to get those prices.

I haven't tried other brands, but the Harbor Freight electronic muffs work ok for me.  And you can talk without taking them off.

I'd be hesitant to buy any muffs without knowing their NRR rating. YMMV.

Check out the Pyramex PM4010 electronic muffs with an excellent NRR of 30.

I've used industrial muffs for a long time.  They tend to be less expensive than those intended for shooting.  But lately I've become a fan of the cheap Winchester foam ear plugs they sell at Walmart.  Be sure to roll the tips before you push them in.  They spring back into place and fill the ear canal.  It also helps get them in if you reach over your head with the opposite hand and pull up on your ear to open the canal.
