I don't carry a multi-tool on a daily basis, anymore (need to get back into the habit but my Swiss Army knife handles most duties pretty well), but used to carry my Gerber daily.  I still carry one when I go fishing as the pliers are really handy for getting hooks out of fishes' mouths.  That is why I really like the Gerber design - the easy one hand opening design is extremely convenient when you are trying to hold a wriggling fish in the other hand!  The model I like doesn't have quite so many tools in it.  I don't really need many of the 'extras' on an everyday basis, the pliers, phillips and flathead screwdrivers do most of what I need and that helps the tool be a bit lighter - and easier to locate and fold out the tool I need.

It has been so long since I bought mine (thirty some odd bucks at Wally World) that I don't remember the name of that particular model.  Not even sure they still make that exact model, anymore.

I do not believe that having a firearm on my person 'invites' violence or trouble any more than simply carrying a wallet will some day cause me to be a millionaire.

The SOG Powerlock has covers that close over the tool compartments which double as grips, to keep the sides of the handles from digging into your hands like on other tools. Instead of gripping two metal edges, you grip a flat surface. It is more comfortable than any other multi-tool I've tried.

The key feature of the Powerlock is the geared pivot. Unlike any other multi-tool, the pliers/wire cutter end is geared at a 2:1 ratio with the handles. Not only does this generate more power, but the mechanism also enables you to easily open and close the Powerlock with one hand.

Here's a pic that shows the covers (on the inside edges of the handles) and the gears:

$50 for one of these is a steal. The tools on the SOG are all very high quality. The knife on my Powerlock is the best knife I own.
