Why choose a P11?
11/25/09 at 10:57:47

I have noticed that action in the P11 section of Ktog has slowed quite a bit while the P3at and PF9 sections gain momentum. Having owned all three of these guns at one time or another I can relate to each and I understand the desire  for slim, pocket guns. However, in the end I do not think any of those guns has proven themselves the way the 12+1 round P11 has.

I carried a P11 as a primary CCW for 10 years and put over 10,000 rounds down the pipe over that time. She rode in a variety of holsters and filled many needs. Each day she traveled with me she was chosen over guns that cost me 2-4 times what I paid for her in 1998. My P11 was carried IWB, OWB, in an ankle holster, 3 o'clock, 3:30, SOB, appendix, in cargo pants pocket, jacket pocket, around my neck in my glove compartment, stuffed in a gym bag,  and jammed under the seat of several cars. She's been to 20 states and has seen the inside of the Atlanta Aquarium, Disney World, Six Flags, Busch Gardens, Universal Orlando, Wild Adventures, several museums and dozens of other tourist destinations. I can only guess at the number of movies she's seen with me and have no idea the number of eating establishments she visited while riding along. She's seen parades, ridden on the subway, and tailgated more times than I care to remember.  She's been boating, snow skiing, snow boarding, mountain biking (a lot), road biking (also quite a bit), hiking, jogging, rock climbing, skateboarding, and has even been dropped once or twice. In that time she shot a few gophers, one opossum, one rabid fox, one Rottweiler, and countless trees, rocks, milk jugs and paper plates.  Twice in that decade she showed her business end to someone that deserved to see it and never once did she balk. She ate everything from questionable gun show handloads to Speer Gold Dots without complaint.  In that same time period several people have asked to test her at the range. The usual comments were something along the lines of "Wow, she kicks like a mule" or "Yuck, I don't like the trigger". I usually replied something along the lines of "yeah, but ugly girls need loving too."

After 10 years of carry she showed some battle scars. Her grip was scratched and I believe she had as much cold blue on her as original finish. For some odd reason, I got caught up in the single-stack craze and foolishly sold her during the Obamamania craze earlier this year. I got over $300 for her and decided to take that opportunity to "trade up". That proved to be a huge mistake. I purchased a Kahr CW9 to replace her and was hugely disappointed. To start with, while thinner, the Kahr was longer and taller and held 5 less rounds. The Kahr's trigger was amazing compared to my P11 but the gun would fail to ignite at random. For a gun priced twice as much as my P11 I sure wasn't impressed. After three trips back to Kahr I sold her off and purchased a Kel-Tec Pf-9. I liked the feel of the PF-9 but was just not as impressed with it in terms of overall build quality as I was with the P11. Mine proved to be problematic and loosened up to the point of feeling sloppy in a matter of a few hundred rounds. I called KT and they said to send it back for service but that the PF-9 is a looser gun than the P11 and to expect it to rattle a bit. In the end I sold her to a gentleman at my local range who stated he only needed a glove compartment gun and would probably never shoot it. He tried it at the range and loved it. Having few choices at that time, I started carrying a Polish P64 in 9x18mak. While I love the P64 in terms of slim lines and ease of concealment, I never quite felt comfortable with the 9x18 round as a defensive caliber and really like more than 6 rounds on deck in case I ever need to use it. Last week I gave in and decided to purchase a new P11. Surprisingly, the local shops all had them. These same shops also couldn't keep P3at's or PF-9's on the shelf yet had several P11's to choose from. That is just fine with me. I was able to negotiate a great deal on a NIB parkerized P11 and a Tagua Slider Holster and was back in business.... 250 trouble-free rounds later she is now my every day carry again. I will admit, my G23 gets the nod from time to time but the P11 still holds the title of EDC.

My P11 was my first compact carry weapon and is now my new carry weapon. People can turn their nose up at her all they want. I know she's ugly and she doesn't have a big name brand stamped on her side but my experience with P11's tells me that they are as reliable as any Glock, S&W or Walther and beats the he11 out of Kahr in that department. Additionally, with the exception of Glock, Keltec's customer service is leaps and bounds ahead of the other companies. The P11 delivers 13 rounds of +P 9mm luger in an easily concealed reliable package smaller than most company's 380 offerings. The gun was designed over a decade ago and has been copied by big name brands yet still retains the title of "Smallest Full Capacity 9mm" available today.

While I know that a gun is simply a tool and having an "emotional attachment" to a tool is just silly,  I have to admit I never should have sold my 1st P11. She was well built, loyal and reliable. She deserved better than to be traded off when the grass looked greener on the other side of the fence. Turns out, the grass is always greener over the septic tank.  I can only hope that my new ugly-duckling will last as long as her predecessor.

Thanks for those good reflections and all true.  The original Kel-tec that started it all, the P11 was/is so far ahead of its time...  15 years later, for price, size, weight, reliability and capacity...  to all other manufactures I say,  "You can't touch this!"     Cool

Great Story. I am of the same mindset as you are. A friend of mine bought an early production P-11 way back when. We went shooting and it was run hard that day. No burps, farts or malfs at all. He traded it for a Colt 1911 Series 80 to another friend of ours whose wife liked it a lot. A couple years ago, my daughter picked one up, gently used, and it is her EDC. She has the belt clip on it and she loves it. I got mine, NIB about 18 months ago. Blue/Black and three 12 round mags in addition to the stock 10 and it is my EDC. My Taurus PT-1911 was my EDC for a long time and my P-11 was my BUG. It just got to be too much weight on the belt, 2 mags of .45, 2 mags of 9MM and 2+ pounds of 1911....I'm a big guy and all, 6'2", 225 but now I just carry the P-11 and 2 extra 12 rd. mags and I feel so much lighter...........lol I also do not ever feel undergunned either. 115grn JHPx 37 is serious medicine should I ever have to use it. I carry FMJ in the 10 rd mag. If TSHTF and 37 rounds don't fix things, I figure the BG is using cover by then, so the FMJ should do the trick. I heard somewhere that a Self Defense firearm should not be comfortable, but it should be comforting and my P-11 is just that. My only complaint, it is way fun to shoot and it DOES have an appetite, but that is why I own it, plenty of rounds for the price and well made too. Good looking little tool IMHO, no ugly girl/duckling either. I don't even mind that is a harder kicker than many other 9MM pistols, I am a bit of a Recoil Junkie, I love to fire off my 5.5" barrel Blued Ruger Redhawk .44, so the P-11 is nothing to me..........I will never let this gun get away from me for any reason and will buy more when $$$ allow me too. Different colors ya know, but they will be P-11's

SmileyGreat story.  Thanks for sharing it.  I love my P11 as well.  I have a p3at and carry it whenever deep concealability is needed.  But I can always rely on my P11 for that balance of concealment and serious stopping power.

I went through a carry dilemma when the weather started to turn colder.  During the summer I always front pocket carry a P3AT, sometimes another IWB at 4 o'clock when riding.  With the colder weather I wanted more than the 380.  Possibilities for pocket carry were Kahr PM40, KT PF-9, P40,P357 sig,  P11 or Kahr CW45 IWB.  I tried the PM40 for awhile but it didn't draw from the pocket as well as the P11, the PF-9 printed a little less but I settled on the P-11.  It's just hard to beat 14 rounds of 115gr DPX in your pocket.  The capacity of the P11 was one of the reasons it beat out the 6 round of 40 S&W for the Kahr.

JB, you waxed eloquent, indeed!  I have added a link to your testimony on my P-11 review page...

* easily concealable size but not so small as to be too difficult to control well
* good capacity @ 11+ rounds
* 9mm Luger is a proven SD round
* proven design in production over a decade
* top notch customer service should you ever need it

Why not choose the P-11?

I hate to admit this but I bought my 11 thinking I was getting a 9.  I was in a gun store and saw what I thought was a 9 and it was cheaper than the 9 I had bought and shot at another gun store about a week earlier.  I really liked the original gun and wanted another one.  I actually got all the paperwork done and was looking at the NIB Kel Tec when I realized it had a 10 round mag instead of a 7.  The seller didn't act like he knew the difference either.  When I finally looked at the end of the box and saw it was an 11, I told the man that I wanted it anyway, just to have both guns.  I get to shoot it Monday and can't wait.  I've already got it cleaned and ready to go.  I believe both guns are great.  I just hope the 11 shoots as well as the 9. marvinvwinkle,

I think you will find the P-11 is a BETTER gun. I hope you enjoy yours as much as I enjoy mine.

Thanks for the kind words everyone. I don't think you can find a better all around carry package than the P11. On other forums they RAVE about the PPS. I tried one, it felt gooood, it shot gooooood, it carried 1/2 the rounds, was taller and longer. IMHO, the trigger was too easy for CCW and it was far to expensive to treat the way I treat my P11. It also choked on the only magazine of Speer Gold Dots I tried to shoot through it. When it comes to my everyday carry firearm, I don't want a picky eating thoroughbred; I want a reliable workhorse.

Thanks for adding my thread to your page Marshall. I hope people considering a new CCW will learn from my experience and mistakes.

After much research (thanks to KTOGers for so much info), I chose the P-11 over the PF-9 for the previously stated reasons.  I was confident in my choice, but after such great post by JBABBLER, I look forward to many years of shooting/carry! A no-nonsense SD weapon that goes bang everytime with anything you feed it!

Jbabbler,  Can't seem to find that Tagua Slider Holster spec'd for a P11 any place including Tagua's site. Is that holster actually made for a different gun?
Thanks,
Sal

Sal, the one I bought is for a Kahr P9. It fits and retains perfectly. I tried several that day and this one felt like it was made for it.

On the website they call it a Tagua "Quick Draw". Desantis has a similar holster that they call the "Slider" but it also has a retention screw. .

I was active on this board way back when under a different user name. I had just gotten my P11 and P32 brand new. They both are turning 10 next year and I haven't yet had one problem with either. The P11 was the first handgun I ever bought. I liked it so much I went out and purchased him a little sister. I messed up once and sold the P32 to a buddy. I got lucky and bought it back 3 years later. I have had many guns come and go, but my Kel-Tecs have always stayed.
