Spotting Scope Advice Needed
07/23/10 at 17:29:42

Getting tired of using binoculars.  Not enough power, takes me completely off the gun, etc.

Been looking at this:
http://www.midwayusa.com/viewProduct/?productNumber=242404

Good, Bad, or Ugly?

Other suggestions that may be better?

Price is important, but I refuse to buy poor quality.  I would rather do without.

I'm still "in search mode" and haven't made a decision on this but while looking, I DID find that a trip to one of the "BIG BOX STORES" (BASS PRO and D1CKS here) and talking to a KNOWLEDGABLE sales rep (and the people who walk by and throw in their two cents worth, lol) was VERY IMPORTANT - and being able to physically handle and SEE/USE/LOOK through them helped a TON!

Now that being said.......... I won't BUY there and pay their prices - I'll probably buy "online" somewhere, used, new, clearance, etc once I've decided on features, model, brand and price.

(when I FINALLY make my decision, I'll probably go Midway - it's 4 miles away and I can do a customer/warehouse "pick-up" with no shipping charges)

I would like to handle one as well.  Nearest BB sporting goods is cabelas, and that is over an hour each way. Sad

The Konus had great reviews on both Midway and Optics Planet (FWIW??).

How about size? They say it really does matter...   Wink   It is about $220 for the 80mm and $300 for 100mm.  56% more glass area for 36% price increase...  I know, too analytical.  Ah Well.  Being a CPA is not just a carreer, it is apparently a lifestyle. Wink

Recommend you look for one with a purpose built tripod. At those magnifications, getting a good tripod that fits your stability and height requirements is just as important as a clear scope. Might also cost less to get them as a set - not sure about that though.

Also, a reflector type is much lighter and more compact. Tends to be more expensive, though, but worth it to some for the size/weight and the small alignment scope some add onto the side.

Well, I do have a 4" Schmidt Cassegrain (Bausch & Lomb Criterion) that I could whip out. Just seems kind of bulky and a bit fragile...

Depending on the eyepiece that I choose to put on, I would not be surprised if you could see the hairs on a gnats a$$ at 1,000 yards.  Smiley

I put a 45 degree correct image diagonal on my small telescope (the Orion "Short Tube 80" F/5 refractor), chose a Celestron 8-24mm 1.25" zoom eyepiece, and a Bogen 3021 leg set with 3047 pan/tilt head.  It's a dynamite spotting scope setup.  But big and heavy - not something you want to carry very far.  However, I already had all these parts except the zoom eyepiece and that was fairly cheap to complete the conversion to a spotting scope.

I currently have this one that I bought locally http://sportsmansguide.com/net/cb/waterproof-spotting-scope-by-barska.aspx?a=444 092
And it works well for what we do. However the really long shots such as 500 and 600 yards are more difficult to see holes in paper. So I now plan on bringing this one home from Sportsmans Guide with a 10 dollar off coupon. http://sportsmansguide.com/net/cb/barska-25-125x88-mm-waterproof-spotting-scope. aspx?a=556286

Granted it's not an expensive piece of glass. But the one I currently have has held up just fine over the years and done the job. Besides, it's not like it's getting abused by sitting on top of a .308 or something? It just needs to sit on a bipod and help my old tired eyes see holes!  Cool

I just used them and ordered mine since you got me talking and thinking about it again.   Wink

I've had one of these for 4 years now.  It's good to 200 yds with .30 cal holes.  Maybe 300 with a nicely contrasting target.

The important thing for me was to get a tripod with fine tuning knobs for windage and elevation adjustments.  CDNN used to have one for about $20, but I don't see it listed anymore.  Something like this.

Just found this site in a banner ad during my morning surf session.  Prices look reasonable for what little I have viewed so far.

The Konus is Chinese-made. For the same specs, I'd probably just go with the Barska that has the similar specifications, unless someone knows definitively that the Konus really does have $200 more quality in it besides the extra 40mm in aperture on the objective.

Actually you can find the Barska 20-60 for a bit less than that. I bought mine for around 60 IIRC?
And the new Barska (mentioned in my post above) that just came in last week that's 25-125 88mm only set me back 120.00.  Wink

I bought the same Barska from Sportsman's guide as a xmas present for my Dad last year, when it came in I used it in the parking lot and seemed to be OK but we finally got an opportunity to use it at 100 yards a few months ago and couldn't get it to come into focus. Almost, but had to use all the focus travel and still wasn't clear enough to see .223 holes in high-viz (Dirty Bird) targets. Sportsman's Guide was nice enough to replace it 6 months after I ordered it but haven't had an opportunity to try the replacement. And the tripod that comes with it is too small to support the nose heavy 88mm scope, it kept falling over. next time we go to the outdoor range I'm also gonna bring my 80mm binoculars, they're on a heavy tripod and cumbersome to drag out but a bad view is useless.
