Kel-Tec P-11 Slide Release
07/27/10 at 00:27:50

Has anyone done this to their P-11?    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y5Lymgs7lWY
I realize that it does void the warranty, but every pistol I've ever owned did this on it's own, without modifying the slide.  I'd rather do this than rack the slide after putting a new mag in. I'm wondering why the P-11 doesn't work like this from the factory. Does it cause damage to the gun somehow?

Well, for one, Kel Tec doesn't call it a slide release...it's a slide stop. They didn't design it to work as a release.

Secondly, I don't think doing that (the file thing) will void your warranty, all you would be doing is speeding up what will naturally happen after several hundred rounds. The slide stop gets easier to use as a release (if you want to) with use.

Normally if you polish both surfaces, the slide and the slide stop, you can get it to where the slide stop is usable as a release.  If you feel the need to file on something I would file on the slide stop first, it is a lot cheaper than the slide.

...And as Zeke mentioned in the "jamming" thread, the slide is meant to "slingshot" release, rather than doing the "Hollywood Rack".  Although Kel-Tecs have great recoil springs, not doing a slingshot release **could** result in the 1st round not properly going into battery.
But...  To each their own.  Smiley

The P-11 I put in layaway doesn't just release unless you rack it back slightly. I'm used to just thumbing the slide release so that it reloads a new round into the chamber from a fresh magazine. Is this common for a P-11? Is it something that corrects it's self after a break in period? That's why I was interested in the slide modification. By the way, The gun is used, but doesn't looked like it was even shot. I thank everyone for their insights, advice and help here.

None of my KTs will release the slide by pressing the slide stop, I've tried, they all may as well be cemented in place.

FWIW, all my Sig pistols will release the slide if I press the slide stop but I don't consider it a good habit so I don't use the slide stop as a slide release.

Maybe it's all in the wrist.    Cheesy

I mean wrist strength or forearm strength, I can work the slide stop as a release on my P11 and my PF9. My buddy has trouble with his PF9, but it works fine for me.

As it's not designed as a release I don't think you can count on it "correcting" it'self.

My P11/40's slide lock won't budge & if it did the round would probably hang on the ramp.

Haugrdr you must have one heck of a grip!!!!

It is a non-issue really.  If you are carrying the P11 for SD I would assume that you loaded it at the house by sling-shotting the slide as the manual prescribes.  With the capacity of the P11, if you find yourself having to reload it during a SD episode, you have already seriously screwed up.  FWIW, the slide stop can be tuned to function as a slide release (see link below), and it some cases it will wear in and function that way on its own.  However, assuming you don't carry an unloaded gun, who cares?

So True!!  Cheesy
If though, you do always carry a 2nd mag and feel the need to practice reloading, try practicing a Tactical Reload, where you only fire 9 or 10 of your full 11 rounds (assuming you're +1 in the tube), drop the mag, insert fresh mag, resume firing.
**Because you swapped mags BEFORE running out, there is still 1 round in the pistol, the slide did NOT lock open and therefore, no NEED to release the slide.**  Wink

True...  Not nearly as  much Dramatic Effect as doing the "Hollywood Rack", but IMHO, it's more efficient and effective.  If you learn to mentally keep track of how many shots you fire, you won't hear Clint Eastwood in the back of your head saying "did I fire 7 shots, or 10?".
