I generally use somebody's cast lead bullets, 250 grain.  Hornady makes some good bullets for it though.

I tried W-231 powder and it looked like I was shooting black powder.  I have not tried any other powder so if you do please let me know.  I have used the Hornady 255 cast round flat nose so far and have some jacketed bullets for when I find a better powder. undecided undecided undecided

Will do.  Looking over the shelf, I have AA-5, 2400, and Unique.  Maybe one or two others buried under the stack.

Glad I stocked up on most of my stuff last year.

I believe a company by the name or Oregon Trail makes boowets that are very popular with the Western Action crowd.  I'll see what I can find tonight.  I've run across some others in my searches for 45-70 supplies.

They also have some good downloadable pdf reloading primers at the bottom of their links.   Smiley

Unique is kind of my go-to powder for a lot of light and mid range handgun loads.  Give it a try in .45LC and I think you 'll like it.

Just be careful not to double charge a case, though.

Question....Is anyone loading / or shooting 250gr JHPs in a .45 ACP or is that a bit too much ?

It is possible to load 250 grain bullets in the .45 ACP. But some guns will not feed them due to the nose design of revolver bullets.

The other thing is, they are so long, more bullet is inside the short .45 ACP case, and the base may bulge the brass down where the tapered web starts, to the extent they won't chamber in tight chambered guns.

The other other thing is, you can't get enough velocity with that heavy a bullet in .45 ACP to reliably expand it, so your big bucks JHP are being wasted.

Thanks, I figured ther was a reason that I only found the loads in the Lee Manual.  Some times they are a bit extreme.

I used to shoot a lot of .45 colt.  I used 250 cast bullets, but since i was into the Cowboy thing, i was putting in 35 grains of black powder, a cardstock disk (used a 3/8" punch), a fiber/wax wad and shoving in the bullet to compress the powder.  Pretty much the original load. Don't remember what powders I used for smokeless, but was pretty much pushing right around 900 fps, standard Lee manual loads.

I did do some hunting with a Ruger Blackhawk/ Marlin 336 combination.  There are specific loads these guns can handle, just be sure you don't mistakenly put them in a weak or old gun, only for Rugers/Marlins. There is always the chance of BOOM when you load hot.  IIRC these loads were pushing in the 1200fps range with a 250 grain bullet.

Thanks for the tips

I have ordered .451 Hornady XTPs JHPs for now.  250 gr for Colt (using Rossi Carbine), 200 gr for ACP.

While I was at it, I picked up some 125 gr XTPs for my .38 Special.

I've tried loading .451 bullets in 45 Colt brass and they almost fall into the case.  I believe you will want .452 bullets for 45 Colt as .451 is usually for 45 ACP.

In smokeless powder I like either Unique or Universal.  Universal in 6.5 to 8.1 grains should give you velocities from about 760 to 975 FPS with 250 grain LRN FP bullets.

Unique in the range of 8.2 to 8.5 should give you 800+ FPS.

I shoot my 45 Colt out of a 5.5 inch barrel Uberti Colt clone.   Smiley

Unique 6.9-7grains, Oregon Trails 200gr Flat Nose lead crimped to grove, Winchester large pistol standard primers. Cowboy Action Shooting. Best I've used and less recoil than the rest. Functions well in all guns from the 7.5 to the 4.5 to the 24inch barrels. Wink
